Investigation on the effect of Asystasia vogeliana powder on bean weevil (Callosobruchus maculatus) was carried out in CRUTECH, Calabar, with a view to protecting Vigna unguiculata and having an alternative means to chemical application on beans (Vigna unguiculata) in storage. The powder of Asystasua vogeliana (Yoseh) was applied at different dosages of 1mg, 3mg and 5mg on stored bean grains (Vigna unguiculata) and tested against the bean weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus, in the laboratory. Adult mortality at 24, 48, 76 and 96 hours were assessed. Adult .emergency and grain damage result showed that 3 and 5 mg powder of the plant leaves were more toxic to C. maculatus and suppressed F1 progeny emergence compared to 1mg powder. The efficacy of the powder on the weevil was dose dependent with higher doses providing greater protection to bean grains. The highest mortality rate of C. maculatus was observed at a concentration of 5mg of A. vogeliana powder after 3 days. The phytochemical screening of the plant revealed the presence of Alkaloids, Flavonoids, Tannins, Glycosides, Saponins, Polyphenol, Steroids, Anthraquinones and reducing compounds. This research work provides the scientific basis for the use of A. vogeliana powder in stored product protection at the small-scale farmer level to reduce the application of toxic synthetic insecticides.
