  • BRIEF HISTORY.
The Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) was established in August 2002 by Cross River State Bill No 9 recently amended as Bill No 6 of 2004. The Department of Biological Science is one of the pioneer departments of the University. Since its inception in 2002, the department has pursued the goal of training students in all aspects of biological sciences through deployment of modern, sound teaching protocols, robust and constantly updated laboratory and practical scientific dicta, as well as tutorials.
The department has had five Heads of Department since inception. They are Dr. Paul A. Akpan (September 2002 – October, 2006), Dr. Okpok, E. Okon (November 2006 – November 2007), Dr. Emmanuel M. Ikpeme (November 2007 – April 2009), Dr. Arikpo I. Okoi (May 2009 –July 2011), Dr. Emmanuel C. Uttah (August 2011 to August, 2013) and Dr. J. T. Abraham (September 2013 to January 2014) and Dr. Samuel Udo (February 2014 to present). The Department is blessed with capable and reputable academic staff who have distinguished themselves in the academic world.
Through periodical reviews of its curricula in conformity with emerging trends in the profession, the department is abreast with proclivities towards producing graduates with adequate entrepreneurial skills for self-employment. The department has produced over five sets of graduates thus far, and some of them are trailblazers in different sectors of the Nigerian economy as well as in the global academic arena. The first graduate with a First Class degree from CRUTECH, Miss Linda Oyama is from this department, and is presently on a Cross River State government scholarship at University of Leeds for her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree.
The department successfully hosted the 33rd Annual conference of the Parasitology and Public Health Society of Nigeria (PPSN) in September, 2008.

    PHILOSOPHY
The department is anchored on the principle of excellence in producing graduates with sound knowledge and adequate technical skill in Microbiology and Biology who can compete with their counterparts anywhere in the world; and make useful and meaningful contributions to the development and growth of the state and the nation in educational and research institutions; agriculture, industries, Health and other allied sectors of the Nigerian economy.

    VISION
A well-equipped department with well-trained, qualified and motivated staff capable of producing competent graduates for the Biological and agro-allied institutions and industries.

    MISSION
To produce graduates who are ready to develop the industrial potentials of Biological sciences and related disciplines for the economic benefits of the Cross River State in particular and the Nigerian nation in general.

    AIM AND OBJECTIVES
The aim of the department is to provide adequate facilities for teaching, learning and research and revised curriculum to meet local and national needs.
    Specifically, the objectives are:
    a. To produce graduates in Microbiology and Biology to meet the manpower and development needs of the state and the nation as a whole.
    b. To train students in the acquisition of knowledge and basic skills necessary for fundamental scientific researches.
    c. To prepare students for advanced post ‒graduate work in various fields of study including Microbiology and Biology.
