  • A Brief History of the Department
The Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) was established in September, 2002 in a direct response of the state’s need to raise skilled, innovative and technology-oriented middle and high-level manpower resources of the development of technology –based economy in Cross River State. It was established through a merger of the three existing state government institutions namely; Ibrahim Babangida College of Agriculture, Ovonum, College of Education, Akamkpa and the Polytechnic, Calabar.

The former Ibrahim Babangida College of Agriculture, Ovonum became the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry when the university started its first academic session is 2002/2003.

Eight departments were created, namely; Crop Science, Soil Science, Animal Science, Fisheries Technology, Forestry and Wildlife, Agricultural Economics and Management, Agricultural Extension and Rural Development and Agricultural Engineering. In a bid to get the programme accredited by the Nigerian University Commission (NUC), the state government set up a Local Accreditation Committee (LAC) in December, 2003. The LAC streamlined the eight Departments through a merger process into five namely: Agricultural Economics and Extension, Agronomy, Animal Science, Fisheries and Wildlife and Forestry Technology so as to ensure quality education to meet the standard of a University of Technology. During the 2003/2004 session the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension was created from the merger of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Management and Agricultural Extension and Rural Development. Currently, the department has ten (10) academic staff, three (3) technical staff, one (1) agricultural officer and one (1) administrative staff. Students’ enrollment is one hundred and twenty- two (122) and had so far graduated over ninety (90) students.

    PHILOSOPHY:
Production of graduates who are adequately equipped with comprehensive theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for engaging in productive and economic agricultural production.

    OBJECTIVES:
    i. To develop students skills in analyzing and solving agricultural problems.
ii. To equip students with the technology and skills required to be self-reliant or useful in the private and public agricultural sectors.
iii. To train and graduate students who are practically useful to the society.

    ORGANIZATION OF THE DEPARTMENT
The head of department administers the department through committees such as Finance and Budget, Appointment and Promotion, Accreditation, Students Admission, Students Disciplinary, Examination and Staff Welfare committees. The staff are involved in decision-making through regular monthly departmental meetings usually done on second Tuesday of every month. During the meeting the HOD is the chairman while the administrative officer is the secretary. Each member of the academic staff belongs to one or more of these committees which take decisions on different aspects of the department.
