At the inception of the Cross River University of Technology, in 2002, the Fisheries programme was in the Department of Animal Science and Fisheries with Dr. E Ayuk as Head of Department. Dr. H.A. Ibekwe became the Head in 2004. On the advice of the NUC accreditation team that visited the University in 2005, the Fisheries Programme was severed from Animal science to form the Department of Fisheries which commenced fully in 2007 with Dr. Ben Offem as the Head. In 2009, Dr. Ezekiel O. Ayotunde became the head became the head of the Department. From August 2011 to August 2013, Dr. S. N. Ochang headed the department and handed the mantle to Dir., G. U. Ikpi who headed the Department from August 2013 to July 2014. The department was handed to Dr. Fidelis Bekeh Ada in August 2014 to present. The programme was conceived to have the main responsibility of training young men and women to have skills that will help them to produce fish in quantities that would ameliorate the shortage that has been existing in the state and the country in general. To this end careful pains have been taken to develop a curriculum that would lead the product of the programme to have sound practical and theoretical knowledge of animal science and fisheries technology.
The Cross River State is a coastal state and blessed with numerous water bodies including streams, rivers, ponds and estuary. In particular, it is drained by Cross River, from where it derived its name. The Cross River empties into the Atlantic Ocean At at the Bight of Bonny. As a coastal state with extensive coastal line and abundant fisheries resources and access to the sea, there is compelling need to train high level manpower in the fisheries discipline who will manage the enormous aquatic resources of the state. The fisheries programme is broad- based to incorporate knowledge from such diverse fields as chemistry, biology, physics, geography climatology, oceanography biochemistry, among others. It is designed to give practical and functional training in all aspects of fisheries using modern methods of teaching and research. The fisheries programme is also designed to be relevant to the local communities, the State and the Nation by cultivating environmental-friendly attitude and encouraging the adoption of conservation measures to ensure sustainability of fisheries resources for future generations.Objectives
The fisheries programme of the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) is designed to train and produce University graduates in fisheries who will be broad-minded, broad-based and well equipped to live and cope with live in a modern world. The training will equip the graduates to be independent, self- employed, versatile, creative/imaginative and to prepare them to live successfully in a technology-driven world of the 21st century and beyond. It is designed to produce fisheries scientist, fisheries managers, environmentalist, conservationists, researchers, etc.
A graduate of the programme will in addition be able to accomplish the following:
• Engage in production and research that will be able to provide relevant and appropriate solutions related to the fisheries sub-sector and generally help to improve agricultural productivity.
• Be able to take up employment any where in Nigeria, and beyond, in any aspect of agriculture and related area.
• Profitably put his/her skills into operation by establishing and operating their own fisheries enterprises.
• Be able to work in Universities, research institutes, oil companies and other tertiary institutions.
Take up employment in fisheries enterprises including fishing companies, Government establishments as fisheries officers policy makers in government and private companies.
An enabling environment is provided by the Department for enhancement of academic work. Academic atmosphere free of all forms of sorting, extortion and exploitations of students by lecturers is upheld in the Department. The Department apart from owning her own library also benefits from the Faculty library. The commencement of Internet services in this faculty in the year 2006 has considerably enhanced access to recent research materials and other information.
Admission Requirement To be admitted into the 5 year B. Fisheries,the candidate must have either the following:

In addition to an acceptable pass in JAMB candidates must have: -
(a) Senior Secondary School Certificates with credit passes in English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics.
(b) WASC/GCE O’ level credit passes in Chemistry, Biology, or Agricultural Science, Mathematics, English Language and any other subjects. Candidates with at least a P7 in English who have shown high scholastic attitude by passing with high grades in the science Subjects may be admitted.
(a) To be eligible for direct entry admission the candidate must have met matriculation requirements in the relevant subjects plus two HSC/NCE advance level passes in Chemistry, and Biology
(b) OND holders with credit pass in Biology and Science and Chemistry may be admitted into a year one degree programmes.
(c) NCE and HND holders with credit pass in Biology or Agricultural Science may be admitted in second and third years respectively.
Student Work Load
32 credit unit in the third year of study
30 credit unit in the fourth year of study
32 credit unit in the fifth year of study
The assessment of the programme is conducted practically by the Department in line with the course work system. Course examination is given at the end of every semester in which the course is offered.Continuous Assessment is a significant component of the assessment of a student’s performance constituting 30% of the final grade to be awarded. The Grade Point Average (GPA) and the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) system is the yardsticks for evaluating student performance from semester to semester and from year to year. The final degree classification would be based on the following final CGPA ranges;
4.50-5.0 First class
3.50-4.49 2nd Class (upper)
2.40-3.49 2nd class (lower)
1.50-2.49 3rd class
To graduate, a student shall have undergone 5 years of study, including one practical year of 12 months. The activities of the practical year would include periodic seminars on the student work as a way of stimulating interest as well as the presentation of a written report that would be graded at the end of the year. Course work load must meet the graduation requirement of the university. Students must earn a minimum of 172-credit unit to qualify for a B. Fisheries in a five-year programme.
The undergraduate training must be backed with a research project supervised by a competent lecturer. The requirement is designed to exposed the student to research techniques and provide the student with the ability to organize ideas from literature and research findings. The intention of the project work is to prepare the students mind on how to conduct research and interpret research findings.
Probation is a status granted to a student whose academic performance falls below on acceptable standard. A student whose Cumulative Grade Point Average is below 1.50 at the end of a particular year of study, earns a period of probation for one academic session. The student reregisters all the courses in that year class.
The Department of Fisheries is designed to graduate student with specialization in Fisheries, aqua-farming and aquatic sciences In the first 2 years of the training students take courses in the General Studies Department with students of other Agricultural disciplines. In the 3rd year students are expected to offer most of their courses from the parent Department.
A candidate whose Cumulative Grade Point Average is below 1.50 at the end of a particular period of probation should be required to withdraw from the University. Any student who cannot satisfy the graduation requirements within 2-years after the prescribed duration for the programme (i.e. 6 or 7 years after admission) shall be required to withdraw from the university.
